Relationships are the #1 Reason people seek the services of helping professionals like me. Whether as an individual or a couple, “relationship” is always at the core of what brings a client into my office. With couples, often the needs of one partner, and most likely both, are not being communicated for fear of losing the relationship. I work with couples to help them become clear about their needs, to take in and respect the needs of the other, while maintaining solid, healthy boundaries. I further assist them in improving their ability to communicate their needs, and make commitments that support rather than destroy their self-esteem.
Home should be the one place where every child feels safe and loved, and knows that he or she is accepted, whether they’re a poet, quarterback, ballet dancer, or blossoming lesbian. Parents who are attuned and responsive to the individuality of their child are more likely to recognize the cues that assist them in making that particular child feel safe and loved. I work with parents in assisting them in developing insight that enables them to create safe, open environments and relationships with their children. I emphasize tools that help to prevent unintended trauma to their children, and illuminate the particular importance in cases where they may happen to be parenting a gay, lesbian or transgender child.
Despite popular belief in the old Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, gender and its expression exist along a continuum. I work with clients (male, female and transgender alike) to help them distinguish their biological sex from their gender identity (the psychological sense of being male or female) and societal gender roles (cultural norms for feminine and masculine behavior). I facilitate them finding their place along the continuum where they feel most comfortable, and support them in aligning their belief and support systems accordingly.
Sexual orientation also exists along a continuum. Although it is easily distinguished from other components of sexuality, including biological sex, gender identity and societal gender roles; self-expression that violates societal gender roles is often misunderstood as an indicator of sexual orientation. I work with clients to help them distinguish their gender expression from their sexual orientation (feelings and self-concept) and their sexual behavior. I facilitate them finding comfort, support and concord in their sexual identity, behavior and their enduring emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attractions.
